电影改编自同名话剧，讲述在民国战乱时期，五庆班班主侯喜亭（陈佩斯饰）带着戏班进京演出，而店伙计大嗓儿（黄渤饰）被洪大帅（姜武饰）误认成名角金啸天（尹正饰），被要求演出《霸王别姬》的故事。台前台后顿时乱作一团，各方势力卷入其中，一场啼笑皆非的大戏就此上演。
